My Experience Joining the DRWH Program

  I first applied to the DRWH program because I wanted to do something meaningful and I was certainly not disappointed, but I never expected it to have such a great impact on me. Ever since I joined them for the first semester of 2019, I felt welcomed and accepted by the other instructors, evaluators and members of the staff at MIZY, which made every lesson and activity more enjoyable and I ended up spending more time than other instructors at MIZY center since I was also part of the TF team, which was in charge of organizing the certification ceremony at the end of each semester, but I had so much fun that I never felt like I was working.

 Every Friday we went to different elementary schools to talk about world heritage and share our own culture. The students were generally very kind and respectful and I found myself being welcomed by them too in spite of my lack of Korean language skills. This also allowed me to experience what it was like to be inside a classroom with an educational system different to mine, which I really value being someone who majored in education.

 The chances for the DRWH team to hang out weren’t limited to this on-site classes; we always found ways to spend time together. There were field trips and cultural activities organized by MIZY that allowed us to get to know more about Korea and each other and even if there wasn’t an official activity for us to attend, we would go for lunch, celebrate someone’s birthday and even a wedding!

  I felt so comfortable with the program and everyone I met there, that I didn’t even think about it twice when I was asked if I would like to join for the second semester too. I knew there wasn’t a best way to spend my remaining months in Korea than doing something I enjoyed in such a pleasant ambience. Many of the instructors I had met during the first semester joined again too and I know some others would have loved to if they had had enough time.  

 I was a bit concerned I had just been lucky the first time and that I wouldn’t be able to get along with everyone in a second group of instructors, but just like the in the first semester, we all shared wonderful memories and helped each other. The DRWH program is bound to bring open-minded, thoughtful and cheerful people together.

  Not only did this program open my eyes to diverse cultures, but it also made my entire stay in Korea more fulfilling, introduced me to friends that I hope continue being part of my life from now on and also helped me discover new hobbies and goals I had never considered before. If offered to take part in the DRWH program or any other program at MIZY, I would gladly do so and I always recommend others to do it as well, since everyone I met at MIZY and the DRWH program made me feel like this was my second home.

 뿌리 깊은 세계유산 프로그램은 제가 한국에 있는 동안 무언가 의미 있는 일을 하고 싶어서 지원하게 되었습니다.  이 프로그램에 실망하게 될 것이라 생각하지는 않았지만, 이 활동이 저에게 이렇게 큰 영향을 주게 될 지는 미처 생각하지 못했습니다.

 작년 2019년 1 학기부터 뿌리 깊은 세계유산 강사로 활동하면서 강사단 및 평가단, 담당자로부터 늘 환영받았던 기억이 납니다. 때문에 모든 수업과 관련 액티비티에 즐겁게 임할 수 있었습니다. 결국, 수료식을 함께 기획하고 운영하는 수료식 TF팀이 되어 덕분에 그 어떤 참가자들보다 더 많은 시간을 이 프로그램과 함께 보냈습니다. 수료식 TF팀의 일원이 되어 함께 수료식을 꾸리는 일이 무척 즐거웠기 때문에 일한다는 기분은 들지 않았습니다.

 

돌아오는 금요일마다 세계유산과 제 나라인 칠레에 대해 이야기 하기 위해 매주 다른 초등학교에 방문했습니다. 학생들은 대부분 매우 친절하고 정중했으며 한국어 실력이 부족함에도 소통에 큰 불편함이 없었으며 늘 환영받았습니다. 우리 나라와 다른 교육시스템을 내부자가 되어 직접 알아볼 수 있었던 것도 귀중한 경험이었습니다, 특히 저와 같은 교육전공자는 이 경험이 더욱 특별했습니다.  

 

 뿌리 깊은 세계유산팀이 함께 모일 수 있는 기회는 현장수업뿐만이 아니었습니다, 우리는 함께 시간을 보낼 수 있는 방법을 어떻게든 잘 찾았거든요. 뿌리 깊은 세계유산 담당자들이 준비한 문화답사 및 문화교류 활동들을 통해 한국과 한 학기 동안 함께 하는 전체 팀에 대해서 더 알 수 있었고, 공식적인 행사가 아니더라도 함께 점심을 먹고 서로의 생일을 축하하기 위해 모이기도 했고 심지어 어떤 강사의 결혼식에도 모두 함께 갔었습니다.

 

 이 프로그램과 함께 하는 동안 만났던 모든 사람들이 무척 좋았기 때문에 2학기 참가여부를 물었을 때 저는 재고하지 않고 다시 강사단으로 활동하겠다고 답했습니다. 이 활동이 한국에서 남은 몇 달을 의미 있고 즐겁게 보내는 가장 좋은 방법이라는 것을 알았기 때문이죠. 저와 마찬가지로 1학기에 활동했었던 많은 강사들도 2학기에 다시 합류했는데, 2학기에 참가하지 못한 다른 기참가 강사들도 만약 시간을 낼 수 있었다면 기꺼이 참가했을 것이라고 생각합니다.

 

물론 2학기에 다시 강사단으로 참가하게 되면서 1학기와 같이 좋은 뿌리 깊은 세계유산팀을 만날 수 있을지 걱정이 앞서긴 했습니다. 하지만 1학기와 마찬가지로 우리 모두는 멋진 추억을 만들었고 서로서로에게 도움을 주었습니다. 이 프로그램은 이렇게 열려 있는 사고를 가진 사려 깊고 활기찬 사람들을 하나로 모으는 것 같습니다.

 

  이 프로그램은 제가 다양한 문화를 접할 수 있게 도와주었을 뿐 아니라 한국에서의 삶을 더욱 만족스럽게 만들었습니다, 앞으로도 내 삶의 일부가 되기를 바라는 친구들을 만나게 해주었고 전에는 생각해본 적 없었던 새로운 취미와 목표를 발견하게도 만들었습니다. 이 프로그램 혹은 미지센터의 다른 프로그램에 다시 한번 참여할 것을 제안 받는다면, 저는 기꺼이 그렇게 할 것입니다. 왜냐하면 이 프로그램에서 만난 모든 사람들과 미지센터가 저에게는 두 번째 고향과 같기 때문입니다.
