The night I left Korea for Brazil, it the first day of school all over again. My heart racing with an odd mix of anxiety and excitement, I looked back my shoulders and hoped that approximately 15 nights from then, I would be on the same spot in that airport, with a winning grin spread across my face.

I¡¯m usually not the one to complain about long flights, but I have yet to be on one that was tougher than that to Brazil. After transferring to our second flight from Dubai, all eagerness was gone and all I wished for was to see solid ground once again. Our teammates were all exhausted- and yet I think there was still that touch of uplifted spirit on the plane ride(s) to Brazil. All six of us were completely different- in age, experience, background¡¦ But this trip to Brazil was a new start for all of us.

The night we arrived in Brazil was eventful, to say the least. We faced a miscommunication dilemma when the employee in the hostel couldn¡¯t speak English, and he had somehow thought that we could not stay. It took us a trip to and back from another hostel and additional arrangements (that involved much body language) to finally get our room early in the morning. The beds were in awful conditions, but all I wanted was to close my eyes and keep them closed for a good few hours. A journey across the globe definitely required more mental work than I had expected. Still, putting everything aside, I was excited to be there- to the South American continent that I had never been to before. ¡®What other 17-year-old teenager, other than myself, is in my position- traveling all the way to Brazil for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?¡¯ I thought. That night, I reminded myself of my simple life philosophy: ¡°make the best out of what you have.¡±

It was a relief to have a full weekend before the conference actually started, because it allowed our team a chance to catch up with the time difference and even get to know each other. We had some time to recover from the stressful plane flights, and were delighted to visit some shopping and eating sites in Brasilia. The first thing I noticed about Brasilia was the fact that most people could not understand or speak English. Not a bad thing, but definitely an inconvenient aspect. On the other hands, Brazilians, even strangers, were very friendly to us. I presume now that I know more about the city that it would have been because it was rare to see Asians at all in Brasilia. It was like spotting six white men walking down the countryside of Korea. I always thought I blended into the crowd, whether in Korea or the US, but in Brasilia, I stuck out like a sore thumb. It took me a few days to get used to the staring but now that I think of it, I think I enjoyed being recognized wherever I went.

The rest of the week after a weekend of rest was filled with meetings and conferences. I felt like our team did a good job dividing the work into individual parts, where everyone had different sections to focus on. I started out not knowing much about UNESCO or the things it does, but after a few days of listening attentively to the conference, it was interesting and definitely different to see such a process going on. It was like going backstage of a TV station- I was no longer watching the ¡°product¡± of the news, but I was seeing for myself the extensive process of developing the news until it is presented to the public. It was fascinating to see how much a ¡°world heritage site¡± meant to many countries, and how some delegates were even on the verge of tears after the admission of their sites. I could see countries constantly assisting others in advocating their sites- and whether or not this ¡°help¡± was only given for diplomatic purposes, I could care less. It still showed that, by the end of the day, it was the better result to have more sites inscribed, than to have less. It even did not matter if it were to the honor of a different country, if it were to only be for the betterment of mankind.

One site inscription I particularly remember is of the Marshall Islands, notably called the Bikini Islands. These islands have a significant historical value because they were once the sites where atomic bombs were tested on. When our team interviewed the delegates of the Marshall Islands, they had said that the inscription would bring back pride to the natives of the Bikini Atoll. In the midst of the discussion among other countries, the delegate of Barbados had said that it was the duty of the committee that night to inscribe the site of the Marshall Islands. Such a remark got my head wondering, but partially understanding, exactly what drove those delegates in that room to have the passion to sit and fight for the honor of a neighbor. It seemed to make no sense, especially in the egocentric world of today.

I also got to know two Brazilian college students who worked in the conference, Joel and Rafael. They are both students of UNB. One day after lunch, Joel and I sat down and literally talked about our ¡°lives.¡± I talked about what my passion is, how I am willing to pursue it, and why I want to do the things I want to do. Talking about this is always the easiest way for someone to get to know me, and Joel and I instantly became good friends. He is still nagging about sending him some of my writing, and I¡¯m still hesitant, but aside all things, we are definitely planning on meeting up in Korea (he loves Korea!) Rafael is the ladies man. When we had our long ¡°talk,¡± it was about our love lives. It seemed like I was willing to give more ¡°girl advice¡± to him, although he was older than I. He is currently planning on visiting Korea for a few months starting from September, and I am helping him figure out some things before he arrives. I hold those two boys a treasure I have earned from the exotic land of Brazil. I now can say I virtually know at least someone from every part of the world.

I feel like, overall, the trip was a grand success. Our team was very diligent in listening to the sometimes lagging conferences and meeting up on tiring nights to discuss what we have heard, noticed and learned for the day. I feel very privileged to have been given to opportunity to not only attend the conference but to understand what it is to be like to work on worldwide scale. I cannot lie and say that, twenty years from now, I see myself as a delegate of Korea, attending the UNESCO conference. But I do see this experience as another gold star on my brain and heart, learning from it and cherishing the most unforgettable memories. I am glad that fate brought this along for me, because I can now confidently say that my last summer as a high school student was not wasted- at all.
